Wilson’s Eatery — Raleigh, NC

The smash burger is creating somewhat of a burger Renaissance. The smash-style burger is easy to prepare as it is difficult to undercook and you don’t have to cook it to order, so it’s fast as well. It seems relatively easy for an establishment to throw a burger on the menu with little fuss.

We met friends at Wilson’s Eatery before going to the G Love concert. When we were trying to figure out a place to eat, my friend Larry said, “Ell Bell’s Double Cheeseburger is calling my name.” When I read the description, I heard the call as well: two smashed patties, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, house pickles, and Duke’s mayo on brioche.

I’m gonna get ya, said I’ll get ya Ell Bell’s.

I was a little dubious of the brioche bun. Those buns can be too fluffy and overtake a smash burger. My fears were allayed. It was a small, like a potato bun, and held together very well while eating it. It was simple, flavorful, but could have used a better build. I ate half of it before getting to the delicious house made pickles. I’m a sucker for house made pickles as they usually have a more distinct flavor than random pickles you get out of a jar. These didn’t disappoint, but could have been spread out a little better.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this burger. If you find yourself off Wake Forest Road inside the Beltline, head on over to Wilson’s. You will not be disappointed. 4.5 out of 5.
